AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Increasing international trade opportunities was the reason Governor Abbott met with representatives of the Australian Government.

Governor Greg Abbott delivered remarks at the 2019 Great Mates Australia-Texas Barbecue at the Governor's mansion in Austin on Thursday.

The Governor spoke on the lasting economic and diplomatic ties between Australia and Texas and recognized the shared values of freedom and opportunity between the two entities.

“As Texas’ footprint has expanded on the international stage, we have forged close relationships across the globe, including with Australia,” said Governor Abbott. “We are grateful to celebrate this friendship today, and I look forward to the bright futures ahead for both Texas and Australia.”

Australian Ambassador Joe Hockey spoke of Governor Abbott’s desire to expand the Texas economy by selling more and more to other countries. “Australia represents at gateway to the fastest growing region of the world which is Asia…and for Texans, you couldn’t find anyone more similar to Texans than the everyday Australian.”

The 2019 Great Mates Australia-Texas Barbecue, sponsored by the Australian consulate of Houston, brought together members of the Texas Legislature and Australian officials to celebrate Texas and Australia’s historical friendship. Over 20 members of the Legislature attended the event.
