Texas Gov Pushing Message Not To Mess With NAFTA

July 11, 2018 - 5:55 am

AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Governor Abbott continues to push the message of "Don’t Mess With NAFTA," hoping President Trump is watching.

The growing of trade wars, and the new President of Mexico, are both reasons Texas Governor Greg Abbott has to fear a destabilizing the trade agreement that has suited Texas well.

Rice University Political Scientist Mark Jones says with President Trump in the White House and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador heading to the Mexican White House that the potential for problems with NAFTA is much greater.

“Texas is the leader in exports to Mexico, imports from Mexico and the leading trans-shipment point for the nation” said Jones.

Back in April, Gov. Abbott sent a letter to President Trump’s Trade Representative explaining the importance of NAFTA to Texas and again this week he pushed it again on the Cable News Channels.

Jones says, “This is a way for Governor Abbott to send a signal to President Trump that if you do something that hurts NAFTA you’re hurting the largest and most important red state in the country…Texas.”
