Texas Governor Puts Breaks On Red Light Cameras

September 11, 2018 - 5:19 am

AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted out his position against Red-Light Cameras on Monday calling on state lawmakers to get him legislation ending the policy.

The Governor believes the cameras don’t prevent as many accidents as they cause. He cited a study out of Case Western Reserve authored by Economist Justin Gallagher.

According to Gallagher, ”The red light policy does not improve the number of injuries, in fact if anything injuries go up when the policy is in place.” Gallagher attributes this to the increase in rear end collisions at intersections with cameras as drivers stop too fast.

Back in 2015 legislation to end the red light cameras passed the Senate and House only to be killed in conference committee.
