AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - The Texas House of Representatives has voted to honor a Richardson police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

Officer David Sherrard was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex in February of 2018.

State Representative Jeff Leach (R-Plano) is sponsoring a bill to designate the portion of Central Expressway in Richardson as the Officer David Sherrard Memorial Highway.

"It's my hope that this honor will bring a sense of joy and pride to Officer Sherrard's family and his fellow officers all across the state, who continue to serve us faithfully and courageously every day," Rep. Leach said.

The House gave preliminary approval to Rep. Leach's measure, House Bill 540, on Wednesday. Once it passes another vote by the House today it will go to the Texas Senate for approval.

The measure would allow markers honoring Officer Sherrard to be placed along Central Expressway in Richardson. Leach's bill calls for the costs for those signs to be covered through private donations.
