Collin County Man Files Lawsuit Against Candidate O'Rourke Over Unsolicited Text Messages

October 22, 2018 - 6:22 am

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The Beto O'Rourke campaign is being taken to court by a North Texas man over unsolicited text messages.

Sameer Syeed of Collin County took his frustration to court last Friday, filing a class action lawsuit against the Beto for Texas campaign. Syeed says he never opted to receive text messages from the campaign. He claims whenever he received a text, he would call the number or text back, but that only led to dial tones or no response at all.

Syeed's lawsuit further claims that sending texts without permission violates the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. He's seeking at least $500 per text for him and any Texans receiving the unwanted messages.

Beto's campaign claims their phone program is fully compliant with the law.

Ted Cruz's campaign has also sent unsolicited items to voters. In September, many people received what was marked as an urgent summons, but was in fact a fundraising letter.
