ODESSA (KRLD) - An Odessa mother is locked up after police say she led them on a wild ride with her baby on her lap.

Officers say Monique Martinez hopped into someone's truck that happened to be running with her 3-month-old baby and took off on Saturday.

Officers tried to stop her for stealing the truck but they say she raced off with her baby in her lap.

Investigators say Martinez crashed into an Ector County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit and then took off at a high rate of speed while running stop signs and red lights.

Odessa Police Corporal Steve LeSueur says, "She eventually stopped. She refused to exit the vehicle and was using her 3-month-old as a shield. She was actually pulled out of the vehicle by officers."

Odessa police charged Martinez with endangering a child and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The Ector County Sheriff's Office charged her with evading arrest with a motor vehicle.

CPS has custody of the baby. There were no reports of any injuries.
