DALLAS (KRLD) - The American Red Cross is sending 500 disaster workers from around the country including 10 from North Texas to help with Hurricane Michael relief efforts.

Crystal Smith with the American Red Cross says even more disaster workers will deploy in the coming days.

"Crews are trying to hunker down and make sure they wait for the Hurricane out in a safe area. Our focus is keeping both the residents that are staying with us as well as staff and volunteers safe as they wait out the storm," Smith says.

She says emergency vehicles are already there along the coast after helping victims from Hurricane Florence. Now, workers will bring more supplies, food and offer shelter to those in need.

Smith says the Red Cross depends on financial donations to be able to provide disaster relief immediately. You can help people affected by Hurricane Michael by visiting redcross.org, calling 1- 800-RED CROSS or texting the word MICHAEL to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

The donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster.

The best way to ensure your donation will go to a specific disaster is to write the specific disaster name in the memo line of a check.
