Texas Rep Calling On Legislature To Fund School Security

July 10, 2018 - 5:30 am

AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Over the past four years GOP lawmaker Lyle Larson says the State of Texas has spent $1.6 billion on border security, a federal responsibility.  He says protecting Texas school kids is more important than that.

“If you take the 3000 public schools and you added one law enforcement officer at $50,000 a year that’s $150-million a year that we would spend securing our schools.” said Larson.

Larson says it’s important we put the same level of security we have at airports, commissioner’s courts, city councils and the State Capitol.

Larson would like to see the money come from the border security budget.

“Hopefully as the Federal Government stands up more personnel at the border then the State can remove some of the dollars that we’re spending towards something the Federal Government is responsible for” said Larson.

Larson believes the benefit of more law enforcement would be that we’re able to control that environment a lot quicker than if we got people who are teachers that we’ve armed that aren’t properly trained.
