DESOTO (1080 KRLD) - The Desoto Independent School District will vote Monday on a plan to eliminate almost 250 jobs and close a school.

The district held a community meeting Thursday night to take questions from parents.

"We're here because we want to see the district be successful. We're here because we know it can be better than what it is right now. And we're here because we are fed up with the status quo," Superintendent D'Andre Weaver said at the beginning of the meeting.

Weaver says Desoto ISD would become insolvent by the end of June if the district does not make cuts. He says declining enrollment and a lack of "checks and balances" led to the district's deficits.

The plan would close Northside Elementary School. Weaver says closing the school for several years could save the district $1 million.

Desoto ISD may also eliminate about 250 jobs, including 166 teachers.

Weaver says the district would hold a job fair and invite recruiters from other districts to help people who are laid off
