DENTON (1080 KRLD) - A Texas Sheriff says arming teachers is part of the answer to putting an end to school shootings.

Denton County Sheriff Tracy Murphree says schools should arm teachers and place metal detectors at entrances.

In an interview on NRA TV, he says on a trip to the nation's capital, he was in a hallway with U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell, who he noticed each had four armed security guards protecting them.

"These guys deserve security, they're important people in our government - no doubt about it" said Sheriff Murphree. "Don't our children deserve what our Senators deserve?"

Murphree says part of the challenge in enacting changes in the wake of the Santa Fe school shooting, is the nation’s short attention span.
