PROSPER (1080 KRLD) - The town of Prosper has launched a new program to keep plastic water bottles out of the city's landfill. They're calling it "Release, Renew, Recycle".

Water Education Coordinator Tristan Cisco says they noticed that a lot of people were throwing bottles away with some water left inside.

"so our idea was to put out planters at one of the parks to give people the idea that you can still use that water," she said.

Five planters were installed at Frontier Park with custom artwork and messages directing people to use their extra water on the plants before recycling the plastic bottle.

"You might want to drink it because it got warm or it's just been sitting there," said Cisco, "So if you pour it onto the plants and then recycle the bottle, it kind of kills two birds with one stone."

She hopes the idea catches on. City officials are scouting other possible locations in Prosper for the planters and recycling bins.
