FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - With Halloween right around the corner, so are winter conditions.

Ever since temperatures were in the triple digits, TxDOT has been busy getting ready for whatever Old Man Winter has up his sleeve.

“We are stocking up on all the materials that we need,” says TxDOT spokeswoman Bethany Kurtz. “We're calibrating our equipment to make sure they’re ready for the winter weather. We have over 33,000 tons of materials that we can lay down on the roads to help keep them as free of ice as possible,” says Kurtz.

When temperatures plummet, crews will start treating the roads by laying down brining solution.

“What that will do is it will actually lower the freezing temperature,” says Kurtz. “So once the weather hits, the water won't freeze quite as quickly; and so the ice won't form as quickly, and that'll help keep the roads clear for as long as possible.”

Crews will also spread sand on the roadways to improve traction on slick roadways and bridges.

“Safety is our priority,” says Kurtz. “We want everyone to get home safe at the end of the day, and so we try to do everything we can to keep those roads as safe as possible.”
