DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Texas highway officials are reminding people to 'secure the load' when driving on the roadways with items in the backs of trucks or on trailers.

You've no doubt seen, or may have even been hit by, debris coming from the backs of trucks and trailers on the roads of North Texas.

Dallas County and TXDOT are reminding people to 'secure the load' by putting out the reminder for us to protect ourselves and fellow drivers by tying down anything that moves in the backs of trucks.

Dallas County Sheriff Detective Raul Reyna says no matter where you are, where you're headed, or how you're getting there, securing items in the truck is crucial.

"Many people don't understand when you're traveling down the road at 55 mph, the pressure of the wind is very strong" said Reyna.

In Texas alone, there were almost 400 crashes caused by an unsecured load last year. Of those, 47 led to a death or an injury.

Reyna says it's important to drive like someone we love is behind us.
