DENTON (1080 KRLD) - Just days before his graduation from the University of North Texas, Matthew Herrera was hit by a suspected drunk driver while walking.  Due to his injuries, he was unable to leave the hospital to walk across the stage on Saturday. So UNT brought graduation to him.

President Neal Smatresk presided over the exclusive ceremony and presented Herrera with his Business degree.

"It was just really nice to be able to say, 'Hey, we care, you're part of the Mean Green family, and we're going to do a degree conferral for you right here," Dr. Smatresk said.

Dr. Smatresk was relieved to see Matthew in good spirits, and cracking jokes despite his injuries.

"He's a good kid, and he's very resilient."
