ABILENE (KRLD/AP) - A sheriff's deputy in Abilene has been fired after video showed him driving down the highway with an inmate sitting on the roof of his car.

Officials say 31-year-old Martin Estrada was being taken about 150 miles (241 kilometers) from a hospital facility in Wichita Falls to Abilene. Authorities say Estrada slipped out of his handcuffs, kicked out the window and climbed up onto the roof.

The deputy figured the best way to keep Estrada from jumping was for him to keep on driving.  And so he did, calling for help and not stopping until that help had arrived.

For that, he got fired for violating policies on inmate safety and security.

Video of the July 18 incident was recorded by a motorist following the patrol car.
