WISE COUNTY (1080 KRLD) - An elderly pilot of a small World War II-era plane is killed when the plane went down this afternoon.

The 1936 Rose Parakeet single-engine plane crashed in a field across the street from Fairview Airport off FM 407.

The plane’s nose is gone, and there’s visible damage to its wings.

“An 86-year-old male pilot was the only occupant on board and was pronounced deceased at the crash,” says DPS Sgt. Ricky Hunter.

The pilot has been identified as Dominick Pellegreno of Rhome.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are unknown at this time.

“We do not know what the cause was,” says Sgt. Hunter, “whether it was a medical condition or pilot error or mechanical condition with the plane, we do not know.”

The FAA and the NTSB are assisting in the investigation.
