AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - New legislation in Texas will improve conditions for women in prison.

House bill 650 has been dubbed the women's dignity legislation.

Michelle Dietch with the LBJ school of public affairs says being in prison is an ongoing reminder to these women that they are not being given the dignity that they deserve.  "So many of these women experienced trauma before they came to prison.  Being in prison is constantly retraumatizing them in ways that are really unnaceptable.

Starting in September, women will have more privacy during strip searches and access to sufficient feminine hygiene products.

Pregnant women will not use the top bunk, nor will they be shackled during labor. That is rare, but it has happened.

Dietch adds many female inmates were abused before incarceration and are constantly being retraumatized in prison.
