Veterans wanting to earn a new skill to help them navigate in the civilian world can now enroll in a free program at Dallas County Community College. Their new welding program will give students hands on training and the opportunity to earn certification from the American Welding Society within 6 weeks.

Nick Graff is the executive director of advanced technology manufacturing centers.

Graff says simply because it is the right thing to do. He says these people have sacrificed for us and it is the least that they can do to show their appreciation.

The accreditation and certification earned through the program could land a student consistent work, that could potentially earn them $15 to $20 an hour.

Graff says, these jobs are in high demand. Students could find work at a city’s Park and Rec Dept. or even a food production company here in the Metroplex.

The curriculum also includes a financial literacy course and a “Business of Welding” 3-day seminar.

The college is almost finished with its first set of spring graduates for the program and is open for enrollment.
