If trying to stay cool  is costing you more than you'd like, there are a few things homeowners can do to make their homes more energy efficient.

The first thing you can do is check for leaks, around windows, doors, even your fireplace.

Mike Harsin, owner of Harsin Energy Services of Dallas says if you feel a draft you'll want to seal those area. He recommends using calk or door seals and he says most homeowners can do that work themselves.

Harsin also says ceiling fan do help, just make sure they are set correctly "You should have air blowing down in the summer and up in the winter ...in the summer  your wanting to feel the air blowing directly on you"

If you have an older home, Harsin says you may want to consider adding more attic insulation.  He says that should pay for itself in just a couple of years.
